October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Monday, Oct 20, 2008

Early detection improves the survival rate of breast cancer patients. Detect breast cancer early by taking the necessary precautions: perform a monthly breast self-examination; get regular clinical exams; and have mammograms as indicated by your age and risk factors.

Perform a monthly breast self-exam (BSE) two or three days after your period. If you don't have regular periods, do a BSE the same day every month. If you are taking hormones, talk with your doctor about when to do a BSE.

Begin by looking at your breast in a mirror. Here's what to look for:

Changes such as a lump or swelling in the breast or underarm area
Skin irritation or dimpling
Nipple pain or retraction
Redness or scaliness of the skin or nipple
Discharge other than breast milk
If you notice any of these changes, contact your doctor IMMEDIATELY.
